Old, Gently Used & Awesome

I am a huge fan of well designed, vintage and modern home decor and when I am lucky I come across great items at flea/antique markets (or snuffel markt as it is called here in the Netherlands) or consignment shops. My typical luck usually runs the route of the the good pieces are picked up well before I arrive or alternatively I decide it's more then I want to spend and then keep thinking about the item that got away for years and saying why I just didn't fork over the money then, because of course now it's sold. Well now I can take my quest for the perfect unique item for the home on the internet at Chairish.

I randomly came across Chairish when I was searching for a pair of antique Hollywood Regency Pineapple lamps and while I didn't end up picking those up at Chairish, I did spend the next few hours on the site looking at stuff I didn't even know I needed wanted. Simply put, Chairish, is an online consignment company that allows people who have great furniture (either like new or "great bones") to reach a larger audience and it allows the buyer a treasure trove of items. The prices are reasonable for the quality and product AND they even have a 48 hour return policy if it's not exactly what you want. The biggest downside would be the shipping, but if it's an item that you have been searching for forever, it's completely worth the cost. It's totally worth a look or two if you are in the market for unique, interesting and fun.

Full Tray

I have been trying for weeks to find the perfect wood tray for my newly furnished living room and it is proving harder then I thought or perhaps I am way pickier then I need to be. I don't know what it is about the small details that drive me to spend hours searching for a particular item only to change my mind half way through and start all over, but it makes it difficult to make a decision.

You may be asking yourself why I would need a wooden tray, but it is simply because they are incredibly useful. They can be used on the coffee table, serving, cocktails, snacks, etc. and I think it would be a great decorative addition, if I could just pick one. The problem now is that I found a whole slew of fantastic one and now can't decide which one I like best. I will decide, eventually, but until then here are my top contenders of fantastic wood trays from across the web.

Must See Anniversary SALE!!

Why does it seem that the summer flies by sooo much quicker than the rest of the year? I feel like it just started, yet the calendar says we are headed towards August at light speed.

This week I have tried to make sure that I get out of the house/warehouse daily to at least make sure that each day is not all about work. This is twice as hard as you think when your significant other is a workaholic and also works from home and you work together on most of your projects. I can however say that the success rate was 100%, even if one outing was just to the post office to drop of an eBay item!

The best thing about this week is that the mothership came a calling. That's right the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is here (early access and then access for all July 18th) and I have combed through and picked out the best items for your viewing (and purchasing) pleasure. Overall I was pretty pleased with everything, but was a little less then impressed with the shoes, but perhaps it's just me not getting on board with the fall shoe trends. What are your favorite items this year?

Happy shopping!

Like a Ninja

You know that the best way to combat jet lag is to internet window shop. While I shop and put hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise into my cart I think to myself how much I don't REALLY need any of these items and exit out of the site. Oh the items I have found, but for the most part I don't regret not getting any of them. OK, maybe that Alice and Olivia dress that was on sale, but really that's it.

Beyond the internet shopping there are the informercials at three am that call my name. My favorites are the NutriBullet, Miracle Skin Transformer and anything Shark, but I have been able to talk myself out of purchasing these, barely. Then there is the Ninja Mega Kitchen System. The Ninja has been something I have wanted to for awhile. It is a juicer, a processor, a blending and a dough mixing machine all in one. I have talked myself out of it by the fact that I have a blender and a mini processor and don't need to buy something new. Well that is not totally true. I have a mediocre blender that doesn't really crush the ice and processor that takes forever to process anything. So the excuses are done over and the Ninja is mine. I have only used it three times (processor, single serve blend and crushed ice, which is way fun) since Monday, but I LOVE IT. It is everything it says and more. Hopefully this weekend I will get to spend more time with it, trying all the different items, but for now I will make my morning green drink and love how easy and smooth it is.

Spring Cleaning

Michael Kors Shoes...you know you want them

This post should actually be named Buy. My. Crap.

I have been in a cleaning mood, maybe it's all the talk about the season change, but I think it's more along the lines that I clean when I am frustrated and let's just say I have been a cleaning freak. Deep cleaning freak.

I started with the floors and then found myself in my closet, tossing things that should have been tossed a long time ago, but I never bothered to try them on and find out they didn't fit. This time I did and the piles of clothes, shoes, purses and jewelry kept growing and growing. I separated everything into three piles; Goodwill, eBay/consign and craft/trash. I am pretty picky about what I try to resell which is why there are three piles. The Goodwill pile consists of clothing that is still wearable, but not in super top, really good condition. This also includes my Target and Gap clothes, while these are awesome basics and staples they aren't really worth the energy trying to sell. The eBay pile is for the stuff that is a little bit better condition that is worth more then a few dollars. Posting stuff on eBay takes some time so it has to be worth my time to post things. The last pile is stuff that has holes and is in bad shape. I try to use these items in all the things I pin onto my Pinterest craft board.

So what's the point of all this? Well frankly you should check out my eBay page and see all the items I have posted and be sure to check back because I am constantly adding things. I can only add a few things a day because I am still cleaning. Yup, it's that kind of deep clean.

Here are just a few other items, but there are so many more...

These are super cute!

Leith angora, amazingly soft.

Oh and yes, I am back on Blogger. Boring story, but let's just say it's good to be back.

Dealz

Imagine if Etsy and Groupon had a baby website and that site brought you cute handmade and other items at great reduced rates. How awesome would that be? Well the good news is you don't have to imagine it, during one of my shopping rabbit holes for awesome gifts I ran across GroopDealz. GroopDealz is exactly like an Etsy/Groupon mix with a wee bit of new items mixed in. I have seen a few sites like this, but of all of them this site has the most handmade stuff. Plus I love, love, love the necklace I ordered a few months ago from it (Love. So cute. Really.). Just fair warning that you will get a lot of mails from them if you sign up for the newsletter, it's the one thing that bugs the crap out of me. Oh well, deleting is easy.

Don't you totally want to check it out? Well to get you started here are a few of my favorites items that are currently up for sale.

Glitter clutch for $14? Yes please.

Little girl boot socks with lace. $6.50 and sooo cute!

Chevron reindeer Pillow Cover $19.
Because everyone needs one or maybe two.

Now go check it out yourself (as there is more available) and feel free to purchase the pillow for me. I could totally use a whole set of them!

Because Your Totally Indie

Don't hate me, but I am about to use the C word.

That's right Christmas* is right around the corner and of course you want to give the best and most unique gifts possible and I think I might have have found the perfect site for you. To break it down, this site contains all the ideas that you were too lazy, too busy or just plain forgot to follow up on, not to mention things you never in a million years would have thought of and now that you know about it you can't live without it. Well lucky you (or unlucky if it was your idea first) somebody took their idea to the next level via Kickstarter or Indiegogo, actually produced the product and now you can buy it or weep about not getting to it first, or both. The site is called Outgrow.me and it is worth a look.

Here are some of the more brilliant products that I need to purchase now!

Honey Badger BBQ Sauce - Combines the tastes of real honey and freshly chopped Habanero chilli peppers in a tangy barbeque sauce ready for your burgers, ribs, chicken and even king cobra!

This is so brilliant that I can't believe I didn't even think about this first. I can cry about it later, meanwhile I need to purchase this for all the honey badgers in my life.

For real I should have thought of this.
Mason Jar Cocktail Shaker - A unique four piece cocktail shaker based around the iconic mason jar.

Like I need another reason to add another mason jar to my collection (thanks Pinterest).

LuminAID Light - Inflatable Solar Light. Charges in the sun and inflates to diffuse like a lantern.

I am not even sure why I need this, but I want it. Maybe to add to my earthquake preparedness kit. I think I will get two.

Kioky - Perfect fit applicators apply screen protectors in seconds to the iPhone.

This is bloody brilliant. SERIOUSLY. Do you know how many swear words I might have used trying to get a screen protector on my phone? I almost threw it at the wall. I plan on getting one for everyone I know.

Out of Print eBook Jackets - It's time to put the "book" back in eBooks. Made by the oldest book bindery in the U.S. to look, feel and wear like an actual book.

I tried to pick my  favorite one and I can't. I love this idea so very much and know a few people that need this in their stocking!

This is truly just scratching the surface, you really need to go to the site and check out all the different products yourself. I am pretty sure there will be a few that you will kick yourself for not pursing first!

*Did you think I was going to use another word? I suggest you wash your mouth out right now.

Love Lines

Ever have a friend call you up and ask if you can call the Vivid telephone number that she gives you to cancel the membership that her son decided to sign up for with her credit card number? No? Well apparently I am that friend you can call that will call to take care of that kind of business. If you have no idea what I am talking about, enjoy that corner of the world you live in. Me apparently I have no shame about porn stars and such and had a very good laugh with the lady on the phone about the situation. Given her reaction I am thinking that this kind of call happens a lot. Boys and porn seem to go hand in hand.

Beyond porn the other highlight of my week was finding one of my new favorite shopping sites Terrain. It has so much stuff that I want that I don't even know where to start. How about the things I didn't even know I needed until I went to that site? I think that is a very good place to start.

Fresh Pumpkin Crate
Like you don't want this. Please. It's fabulous.

Verdant Terrarium
Maybe it's my thing with jars, but if I was going to have a terrarium this
would be what I would want it in.

St. Helena Martini Olive Juice
My friend J and I will need to be checking this out when she rolls
into town. Dirty Martini's here we come!

Ceramic Salt and Pepper Set
I would use the crap out of these.

ElderFlower Presse
I don't event know if I like this, but the bottle
is adorable and you can add it to vodka.
Always worth a try.

I should actually just cut and paste the entire site on here to make it easier, because I could go on and on. Check it out and let me know your favorite pieces! I would love to hear what you think.

Have a great weekend and if you can, avoid carmageddon II. I hear it's going to be a bit nuts.

Sales of the yard and garage type

Oh yes I do. It's been years since I happened upon a garage sale of the interesting kind, but recently I had a friend convince me that I have just been to the lame ones. And yes, my mind has been changed. Between the never been used trampoline and the brand new still in the box, never have been opened, dehydrator (for $3. Yes really.) I am a convert. Either the ones I have been to before really sucked or in southern California truly has the best garage sales ever. Of course there were a few that I didn't find anything, but at those my friend found brand new wood block for her kid ($2) and super pricey lamps at only $10 a piece with the shades.

Then there was the garage sale that we both picked up a few items for free. I walked away with a perfect LL Bean beach bag and two large awesome jars for $0. Apparently he just didn't want to drag it back in. I have my theories why he was not wanting to drag them in. The jars smelled a bit like a substance that could be used for recreation or medicinal usage that I have heard can make you a little carefree and he was happen to have me cart them off for a smile. I don't judge. They were free and super cute, however my kitchen smelled a bit like Jamaica for an hour or so.

I also scored yards of super cute ribbon for $2 (perfect for Christmas presents), but these are my favorites picks of the day!

I can't wait for next weekend. Woo hoo.

All Hours of the Night

It's about 3:00 am and I am sitting in bed trying to force myself to get to sleep (I might be a wee bit jet lagged), which is obviously not happening so I grab my laptop. If your up you might as well be productive right?

One of the things I do when jet lagged is discover new online shops. This doesn't mean I am buying, mostly window shopping actually, but I like having new options to find new and interesting pieces at. It's also a plus that a few of these shops offer unique items, because who really wants to have exactly what everyone else has?

Relique
This shop is entirely made up of vintage and repurposed "interior accents". I could spend hours on this site looking at all of the cool and interesting items. If you want something unique and definitely not something everyone has, this is your shop.

Wanted item:

Set of 5 Vintage Monjonnier Milk Test Bottles

The Impeccable Pig
I found this through the Penny Pincher Fashion blog and I was hooked immediately. They offer fun prints, easy styles and good pricing. I can't wait to order and check out the quality.

Wanted item:

Black and Cream Dress
Image via the Impeccable Pig

Uncovet
This is just fun stuff. Uncovet is a design centric shop that offers one of a kind products at discounted prices for it's members. Don't worry, membership is free and easy to get. The prices are completely reasonable and the items range from jewelry to art. Gotta love a little bit of this and that.

Wanted item:

Arrow Bracelet

Questhaven Fashions
Need a little pick me up without spending a ton of money? Questhaven may have just what you need. Investment pieces definitely not, but a splash of trend to make your outfit pop absolutely. These kind of sites I tend to stick with accessories or the vintage items, but there are some cute tops that I am tempted to try.

Wanted item:
Brisbane Satchel
Questhaven Fashions

Well I am going to give sleeping another try. Happy Shopping!

FNO

For years I worked a corporate suite at the US Open Tennis event during the semi-finals and finals week in NYC, which if you are not aware is immediately followed by Fashion Week NY. While I never was able to sit front row next to A-Dubs aka Anna Wintour I at least got to explore New York during Fashion's Night Out. For me FNO is basically a free pass to spend a stupid amount of money on things that I am convinced I need because I have consumed a few cocktails. The next morning I usually feel a little guilty, but then purge my closet of a few items that I donate to a good charity and then all is right in the world again. At least that's what I tell myself.

It all started four years ago when V (my FNO partner in crime) and I were walking down 5th avenue and checking out the shops. We knew FNO existed but it was the first year out so we had no idea what to expect. Then there it was, a curious smell of cheap boy toy cologne half a block away, followed by ear splitting music and then finally the half naked Abercrombie & what's it boys in the flesh. This is when we knew that this was more than just a get out and shop event, this was marketing genius. The boys were posing near the front entrance of the door and those who dared to enter could have their photo taken with them. As tempted as I was to have this happen, V convinced me that I couldn't have my first FNO experience be a place that only has clothing sizes for midgets and tweens. So with a wave and a giggle to the boys we continued on down the street ending up at Prada, which in our estimation would be quintessential FNO party. Boy were we wrong. We ended up standing around with a whole bunch of people exactly like us, sipping drinks and pretending that we can afford to even shop there (no amount of alcohol will convince me that the Prada 2009 is worth that amount of money). After we finished our drink it was decided that the best parties would most likely be downtown, as opposed to midtown, but that was going to take too much work (you know, getting a cab and then deciding where to have it take us) so we decided to duck into our favorite restaurant and have some fantastic wine and tapas. Much better than having to pretend to like some ugly shoes just for some free champagne.

The next year we perfected it and so did a lot of the retailers. It was loads more fun and there were way more celeb and celeb wanna be's out and about to keep us entertained. Then the following year my corporate event didn't need us anymore onsite. So last year was my first year not in NYC for FNO. Of course I kicked it up at a party near me in Seattle, because I do still enjoy champagne and a good evening of retail therapy, but it was just not the same.

This year I was a little sad that I wasn't in the US for FNO. I had thought about heading up to LA for a few parties I was invited to, but being in the Netherlands makes the trip to LA a little hard. Then I started noticing online that the FNO has spread to other cities and countries, including Amsterdam (September 13). While it's not quite the same star studded level that NYC & LA seem to put on, it is still quite impressive with fashion shows and sales galore. Which if you think about it is all that matters, unless of course you are into sipping champagne at every store and gawking at Kimye, which is actually what V and I would have been doing if we were in NYC this year.

Last night was FNO NYC and instead of spending it at the local shops I ended up polishing off a bottle of champagne with the BF and the BF's mother while shopping FNI, Fashion's Night In. Which is basically just shopping online, but the perk is that I find it way easier to say no to items online than in person so I had no guilt this morning. Next year who knows where I be. I officially have a year to plan and save.

So did you do anything FNO related or did you stay in and watch the DNC or VMA's?

Cravings

August is officially over and the first breath of fall starts breathing down our necks. It was fun while it lasted, but I guess it's time to get out of the pool and back to work. Crap.

While it's still pretty warm in California, here in the Netherlands (if you have been following along on my photo journey I just arrived in the Netherlands for a few days) you can start to feel the change in the air. I am a sucker for fall and love starting to cover back up a bit after the sundresses and sandals of summer. It's been close to 15 years since I have been in southern California for a fall/winter and I am looking forward to the extra, but not super extra, layers I will get to wear there. Meanwhile I will have the advantage of being able to wear my favorite wool coats whenever I visit the Netherlands. Best of both worlds for sure.

To start my first day back to more than just a photo post I thought I would share what I have been contemplating, purchasing or contemplating about purchasing for fall. Hopefully you may even find an item you need to add as well.

Hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend, now get back to work!

And just for fun don't forget to check out the latest in my photo a day challenge by clicking here.

Get Your Shop On - Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

I wrote about this sale last year here with my favorite picks and this year will be no different. The great thing about this year is that I was able to shop the sale prior to the public sale and online no less. No crowds, no waiting and nothing out of stock. Easiest sale ever. This year I took a different approach to my shopping strategy and really kept to fall basics and essentials to compliment my current closet and not restyle it. I think I made some good choices that will last well beyond fall, which is always the goal with those of us trying to make the most of our hard earned money. Now comes the hard part and I have to wait until the weather cools to be able to wear my items. Apparently SoCal has not received the memo that I want to wear my new boots (Just kidding, please keep the weather warm and lovely mother nature. Thanks in advance. xx Shann)

The sale officially started last Friday, but now is the best time to check it out as the crazed shoppers have died down to a dull roar. Don't wait too long thought, you only have until August 6th to get these prices!

The One With Monica Geller Hair

I have been sporadically online and posting irregularly the last week or so due to my work schedule and then the work travel to Atlanta. Yes Hotlanta in July. Oh my is was hot out and humid. There were thunderstorms and buckets of rain, followed my thick, heavy and hot air. Lucky for me the work takes place in air conditioning, but the walk outside from hotel to convention center is enough to make one melt in a big ol' puddle. The good news is because I have such a fab hair stylist that I had hair serum that doesn't make me look like this:

Oh poor Monica

In other news today is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, otherwise known as my favorite sale ever. I will be putting together my favorite items next week for sure. Oh the boots and purses! Simply Fabulous.

Right now I am just happy to be home and frizz free. Have a great weekend everyone!

Current Obsessions

I shop in outfits. I don't just buy a dress or a pair of pants, I like to plan the entire outfit start to finish. I may not always purchase every item, but I like to think about the possibilities before buying the main item. The outfit I have been currently creating possibilities around (and still not purchased) is a beachy summer outfit that goes from day to night effortlessly and has a big pop of color. This dress certainly fits the bill, but I think I need to keep looking for a similar dress at a lower price tag to make it the perfect dress.

Wanderer

As someone who travels a lot I get asked all the time about my favorite travel items. I finally decided to commit them to a list and share them with everyone via Skinny Scoop (which happens to be one of my new favorite things). All of these are must haves on any flight over 5 hours for me and most go for any trip regardless of where I am going. They are for comfort, style and health, but if I could only choose one that would go with me it's hands down the cashmere travel wrap. It is the most versatile item I have in my arsenal because it is a layer than can be removed, it can double as a blanket and it's stylish. Not to mention that it's cashmere people. Lovely, soft, warm & luxurious cashmere (however they also have a cotton one as well for the budget conscious, but if you can splurge DO IT!). This is an interactive list so if you have any suggestions please add to it. I would love to know what you have as your go to travel item.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Juggle

Remember this? Yeah well I spent one day trying to make that happen and then it was tossed to the side. I already have fallen behind in about every category except work (the one that pays the majority of the bills). That doesn't quite equal balance in any sense of the word. Seriously I am baffled by my inability to get an hour a day to dedicate to me, myself and I. Perhaps I put too much pressure on myself to get this all solved immediately. How do you all juggle your life? Fake it till you make it?? Seriously I need to know! Currently the only place I can get writing done is in the plane, which on one hand is convenient since I am constantly on one, but there has got to be a better way or am I just being ridiculously optimistic? Hmm their seems to be a lot more questions than answers in this post.

In other news June seems to be the month of gift giving. I have birthday's (5), graduations (2) and father's day's (Technically only one day, but 3 people) this month and can't seem figure out what to give half of them. So I turned to the Internet for inspiration and that's when I discovered this:

Etsy MixTape Night Light

Someone has to have this, just can't figure out who yet. I found this via the SkinnyScoop Father's Day Gift Guide. There are a few creative ideas on there you should check out if you are stumped what to give the dad in your life.

Then I came across this on the Great Gifts for the High School Grad list:

Barnes and Noble
I want one too!! How neat is that? With any luck I will get my gift list checked off super quick!

The Mothership

I have talked about Nordstrom on this blog more times than I can count. I have posted things you can buy there almost weekly and recommend them to everyone who will listen. I follow them on twitter, Pinterest, Facebook (and lucky me they follow me back) and participate in surveys on a regular basis for them. In short I LOVE Nordstrom. The other night a girlfriend and I were meeting each other for a quick drink. She was feeling a little sick that day so we were going to make it an early night so everyone could get some rest. Fast forward three drinks, dinner and a little too much fun and you end up at the Nordstrom Flagship shoe department with little care about the cost of a good shoe (What? I got three jobs.). I tried on so many super fabulous shoes and then picked a perfect pair of summer shoes by Stuart Weitzman.

Exhibit A - Also soooo comfortable.

As soon as everything was purchased we decided to celebrate the acquisition of our new shoes before heading home.  While sitting in the restaurant I couldn't resist taking my shoes out of the box for a quick admiration glance. That's when I found this:

I am aware that the cost may be ridiculous for some.
We all have our things.
Anyway, if you can't see what is going on, what I was charged
does not match the sale price on my shoe. I actually think
these were marked down early for the half yearly sale that
didn't start, at that time, for a few days.

So I tweeted this picture to Nordstrom and here is the DM conversation that took place:

I modified the size of the tweets so this wasn't a super long picture, but I didn't change anything in the actual tweets.

I think this all speaks for itself and I had no idea that I could love them even more. I walked in the store in Fashion Island and didn't even need to say a word outside of my name. They are amazing!

Thank you Michael, Theresa & Nordstrom. I will always be a shopper for life!

Balance

This may shock all of you, but when I am stressed, sad, upset or just feeling down I turn to shopping for relaxing. If I buy something, it is a bonus for sure, but definitely not the intention. The actual browsing, trying on and walking around my favorite stores is the actual therapeutic part for me. It is my time to be alone (I do prefer to shop alone) and let my mind stray from the daily crap we all deal with. This week in particular has been a long one for me, we have had so many things going on that it has been going in 5th gear all week. To try and re balance myself last night, instead of working or spending time with the family (I know this sounds bad, but really it was for the best), I did some online retail therapy. While it doesn't have the same feel as doing it in person it definitely satisfied that bit of me that loves looking for that special piece that my closet, kitchen or house is missing. Here are some of my favorite pieces that I may or may not have purchased.

J.Crew Linen V-neck Cable-Knit Sweater
This mint sweater is perfect for those chilly spring
and summer nights.

Elizabeth and James Milo Crop Pant
A total splurge I know, but this is the only pant that
I have found that is pale pink and not super skinny.
Image via Piperlime

Old Navy Chambray shirt
This will help balance out the total
costs don't you think?
Image via Old Navy

Annie Asymmetrical Ballet Flat Sole Society
These are so perfect and Sole Society is my new
favorite shoe store. I will let you know more once my
first order arrives before I give a final stamp of approval.

Love.

Do you see an outfit too or is it just me? Maybe I do need to purchase it all...

Have a great weekend!

Typical Dutch

One thing I have picked up on here in Holland is that to talk with a Dutch person you will get the impression that the Dutch invented most everything. If they didn't invent they improved it. While it may not be 100% true they have mastered many things and there is no denying that, however they did it wearing clogs. In simpler terms they have not mastered or minored woman's fashion. There are many talented Dutch designers, but they tend to have incredible men's collections and the women's tend to be less so. Which is so sad because I really wanted to experience Dutch fashion, but there is still hope for the future. In the meantime you should check out these "typical Dutch" (a phrase I hear often) items as they are all fantastic and most can be ordered in the US.

Stroop waffles are about the most amazing thing on
the sweet side of food that they have to offer here. They are delicious.
I suggest ordering them. You will not be disappointed.
Image via Amazon

This is a truly lovely scent by designers Viktor&Rolf.
I can't wait to have the BF try the men's cologne SpiceBomb.
Image via Sephora

Oh the cheese! I love the cheese here and always have requests
for me to bring some back. Tasty stuff.
Image via iGourmet

I love this brand for bath and body. They have so many
scents and variety to choose from. It's a bit addictive!
Image via Rituals

While that is not all the country has to offer these are some of my personal favorites. Any Dutch favorites you think should be included?
