Turbulence

I woke up on Monday in a foul mood and had to get out the door to the airport for our three week trip to NL. This of course did not make for the most fun morning, but somehow I survived. Then we get to the airport only to find out that I had been moved from a seat next to the BF to across the aisle. Truly this is not a big deal, but I like to invade his space while traveling to maximize my comfort. Due to the class section we were in the only option we had at this point was to ask whoever was sitting next to him if they would mind switching aisle seats with me.

When the gentleman in question arrived I politely asked if he would mind taking my equally comparable seat in the same seat section. He said no. I asked if there was a particular reason for this so that perhaps I could solve this another way. He didn't really have a reason and was kind of a douche about it so I informed him, "That's totally cool and I am sure you won't mind me being all up in your business then during the flight." Seriously these were my exact words.

And that is how you get your way on a 10 hour flight. I do feel a little bad, but I am over it.

In shopping news I bought the Dior Lip Addict Duo duty free and it's pretty amazing.

It can be purchased on your next KLM or Delta Intercontinental flight or at Amazon.

30,000 Feet

If you read this blog often or even semi-often you know that the BF and I fly a lot. As a result of these travels I often observe those around me for sport. While admittedly sometimes these people are boring, sometime you get a few gems that give you great stories to share once you are back on land. With all this flying though I have realized that there rules of 30,000 feet that no one tells you about, but you need to do out of respect that you are all cramped into a large (but incredibly small for this many people) tube that is headed towards your destination at a frightening speed if you think about it for too long. The other night a colleague and I were discussing some of these rules and I thought that I would share them so we can all be on the same page while flying.

Here are the rules according to Shannon in no particular order.

Reclining your seat

If you are on a flight that serves a meal (internationally) don’t be a douche and recline your seat prior to the meal. We have approximately enough space to open our peanuts and drink our ginger ale when your seat is not reclined, so you can imagine how much space I have with your head on my lap to eat an actual meal (I try not to eat meals on a flight as a rule, but still).

If you are on a domestic flight or want to recline your seat at all any time after a meal be mindful and go slow. It also doesn’t hurt if you can look before launching yourself in a backwards motion that scares the crap out of the unfortunate person behind you. Be kind and we can all survive this flight without me feeling the need to constantly shift my legs so that my knee is positioned right in your back through the chair.

The more I think about this, unless you are sleeping or on a long flight, just don’t do this at all. Everyone would be happier.

If you have an aisle seat

Dude, for reals go to the bathroom at least once or at least don’t look like you want to murder me every time I have to (I do try to keep it to a minimum). I go to the bathroom a lot so I always try to get an aisle seat, but sometimes they are just not available. We have to coexist together for a few hours, lets bring some courtesy to this place and not make my bladder want to burst simply because I am waiting out to see if you will get your butt up.

If there is a middle seat next to you, FOR THE LOVE OF KITTIES DO NOT USE THE MIDDLE ARMREST!! The middle seat sucks unless you are a kid or sitting next to someone you know and even then it’s not the best. So imagine you’re sandwiched between two strangers and can’t move your arms without touching someone. It sucks. So keep one arm in the aisle and the other within your seat and we there will be no ill will.

If you have a window seat

When the person in the aisle goes to walk or the bathroom, you go. Don’t wait for them to return and then go. I have had this happen on one of my last flights and I swear this guy survived the trip only because I was so exasperated by the entire flight he just wasn’t worth the breath it would take to tell him what a butt mitten he was being. This a rule that you need to follow always.

As with the aisle seat if you have a window seat with a middle person, don’t take the armrest. It’s rude and people will hate you. If you have a two seater this is a sketchy area, but hopefully you can work it out with your seatmate so everyone is happy. I suggest the back/front approach. This is where one person takes the back part of the armrest and the other takes the front. You can casually work this out by just placing your elbow towards the one area, keeping the opposite area free for them to use at their leisure.

If you have a middle seat

You may think that because you have the crappiest seat in the plane that rules don’t apply to you, but they do. We all have rules otherwise we are an uncivilized plane. First and foremost, don’t be a complete area and seat hog. We are “sharing” a space and we all have limited areas so keep to your seat and armrest please. It’s not like being on the aisle or window have any actual space differences, we can just adjust a little bit more on one side.

Same rule with as window seat and bathroom. Go with the flow and don’t be a complete jerk and need to go every hour on the hour. It’s rude.

Also please don’t act all offended when I won’t trade with you so you can sit next to your friend who is also on an aisle. Middle sucks and if your stuck with it, man up and deal.

Wanderer

If you like to roam a plane during the flight that is great, but please don’t stand next to my seat and do your lunges, leg lifts or whatever the heck that was. Keep in mind I am at junk level and it’s not cute to shove yours in other peoples faces. Also hanging out at the bulkhead row is rude to those seated in the most uncomfortable seats on the plane (at least if it is a 747). How could you focus on your movie or sleep if someone was standing right in front of you? You can’t, because it’s almost as creepy as Edward watching Bella sleep. Almost. There is the middle of the plane and the back of the plane for hanging out. Use them.

I am writing, not looking at porn so lets pretend that you aren’t reading over my shoulder please.

Flight Attendant Respect

Last, but definitely not least, be kind to your flight attendant. They have nowhere private to talk crap about you, so do them (and me) a solid and realize that you are just one of many, aboard a tube with a destination that you get to go out and enjoy while they sleep, turn around and have to deal with more of the same. They are kind to you, even when I would vote you off the plane. Please consider that the next time you feel entitled to cause a scene because you didn’t get the seat you wanted.

Coincidentally I wrote this post while flying and saw evidence of people breaking these rules left and right. Apparently everyone needs to read my blog.

A letter to the people next door to me with the baby

I understand that you have a child, congratulations. It's hot out. Your kid has lungs and it is now a problem. Here are my suggestions on making me not go insane and want to have a rave party 24/7 to annoy the crap out of you.

1) I know that you have air conditioning. Use it.
2) You in insist on having your windows open. Why? I hear your baby all day and all night. See number one. It involves closing your windows.
3) I don't hate babies, but I am beginning to hate yours. Don't make me hate your baby.
4) It's not that I think I am better than you, because I do have people over and we make noise, but we don't cry that loud (or even make noise that loud) and it's not all day and night. See number one.
5) Perhaps your child has issues. Look into a vacuum. I read a lot of mommy blogs that suggest this and since I can't drink the proper amount of alcohol to drown him out, throw me a bone.
6) For the love of puppies, he is an unhappy camper and I am sure it sucks for you too. So I left you a bottle of vodka on the doorstep, use it. Yup that was from me*

*For real. Maybe I should have left you my website address so you could read this.

Thank you,
Shannon (your trying not to be your drunk neighbor)

All Hours of the Night

It's about 3:00 am and I am sitting in bed trying to force myself to get to sleep (I might be a wee bit jet lagged), which is obviously not happening so I grab my laptop. If your up you might as well be productive right?

One of the things I do when jet lagged is discover new online shops. This doesn't mean I am buying, mostly window shopping actually, but I like having new options to find new and interesting pieces at. It's also a plus that a few of these shops offer unique items, because who really wants to have exactly what everyone else has?

Relique
This shop is entirely made up of vintage and repurposed "interior accents". I could spend hours on this site looking at all of the cool and interesting items. If you want something unique and definitely not something everyone has, this is your shop.

Wanted item:

Set of 5 Vintage Monjonnier Milk Test Bottles

The Impeccable Pig
I found this through the Penny Pincher Fashion blog and I was hooked immediately. They offer fun prints, easy styles and good pricing. I can't wait to order and check out the quality.

Wanted item:

Uncovet
This is just fun stuff. Uncovet is a design centric shop that offers one of a kind products at discounted prices for it's members. Don't worry, membership is free and easy to get. The prices are completely reasonable and the items range from jewelry to art. Gotta love a little bit of this and that.

Wanted item:

Questhaven Fashions
Need a little pick me up without spending a ton of money? Questhaven may have just what you need. Investment pieces definitely not, but a splash of trend to make your outfit pop absolutely. These kind of sites I tend to stick with accessories or the vintage items, but there are some cute tops that I am tempted to try.

Wanted item:

Well I am going to give sleeping another try. Happy Shopping!

Lag Time

Jet lag is no fun and I have a raging case of it right now since I just returned from the Netherlands to California yesterday. Ugh. I have been up since 2:30 am and can't get back to sleep! To help try and get back to sleep I went to the guest bedroom and tried to watch TV. Of course 3 am TV is pretty awful and I ended up watching the Wizards of Waverly Place and the Suite Life on Deck on the Disney Chanel. This got me thinking about how I should have been a Disney star. Then I thought about Lindsey Lohan. Since I don't really want to have a drug habit or do jail time, maybe it worked out just fine in the end that it didn't happen for me.

After about an hour of Disney I had to move on to the Internet and check out some new blogs courtesy of the Curvy Girl Guide. I started reading Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Life blog (about two months worth of posts) and it almost had me convinced I should become vegan. Then I realized that I don't want to be vegan and started catching up on Smitten Kitchen and Sprinkle Bakes instead. Check out thisthis and this. All decidedly not vegan. I might just have to make these this week in fact. Then between all that I wrote this post and have now officially gotten a little tired again (and hungry, but tired is winning out) and am headed back to bed for a few more hours of sleep.

Babble Babble Goodnight!!

Found: My New Home

Think of a sunny warm paradise and then add amazing food, French waiters and a side of Russian hookers and you will have Monaco. This place is truly amazing and I have barely had a chance to explore it yet. The picture above is the view I had while having lunch. Just off to the right out of the frame was a huge yacht just hanging out in the harbor. How do I meet those people and more importantly do they have wine on board? Oh I am just being silly, of course they have a wine cellar below deck. I think I will never leave here.

Mouth Breather

So how did I catch a cold right before I head to Monaco? Not fair does not even begin to cover it. I don't what's worse being sick on a mini holiday or being sick on a 10 hour flight. For this trip I have officially done and currently doing both. I also totally missed my year anniversary of starting this blog. What do these two things have in common? Nothing, other than for some reason I decided to check when I started this blog while waiting for the 10 hour flight that I prayed I would pass out on. Apparently I started the blog on April 25, 2011. So I have been posting for well over a year and no one has kicked me off the net yet. Yay me and stuff.

Currently I am making myself feel better by chugging Emergen-C and champagne in the KLM lounge at Schipol and trying to not look the guy across the way in the eye. He keeps looking at me funny and it's starting to give me a complex. The best way to fight a cold is with alcohol, dude. Duh. Maybe next time I will just put the Emergen-C in the champagne and save anyone having to clean an extra glass. You know because I am green like that.

Mail Stop Whoa

You know what happens when you have your mail on hold for three weeks? This.

So yeah.

It is so fantastic to be home. I missed the warm air, sunshine and my rock star mattress of pure goodness and love these last few weeks. While I would love to say that this weekend will be filled with time zone adjustments and margarita’s, it instead will be jam packed with cleaning, grocery shopping and working so that next week I can head to the Pacific NW for a few days. With the jet lag, which results in me waking up at 4:00am, I have an early start on the day to get it done. Then there is the crash around 7pm, but we will deal with that later. We also have company coming on Saturday which means I need to clean the guest bathroom. I had hoped that this would be a chore that I could avoid for awhile, but living in Southern California people like to visit. I think to console myself I am going to buy these.

I totally deserve them. It’s a big bathroom. Maybe I should get this too.

Have a great weekend & Happy Mother's Day to all you Mothers!

Mini Break

With the kids on holiday this week the BF and I decided to head out towards the North Sea for a mini break. The place we are staying at has both a water park and an amusement park onsite which means that we have plenty of things to see and do. Since the weather calls for rain a few days this week we are making sure to explore outside whenever it's dry and head to the indoor water park when it rains. Works well for everyone. Now if only I could shake this jet lag all would be in order, but I am pushing through hoping it will go away!

This lovely picture below is of a little boy statue peeing. He swings from side to side like a sprinkler and the trajectory changes randomly so if you think you are far enough away to not get 'peed' on, you are mistaken. Only in Europe. Ha!

Parched

I don't know if it's the traveling or the new cleansing product I tried from my BirchBox, but my face is DRY. What's worse is for once my trusty argan oil isn't cutting it. So I quit the cleansing product  (which this is the first thing in a year that I have tried in my BirchBox that has even hinted at not working with my skin) and have been putting everything from old lady moisturizer to argan oil every few hours to try and combat this with not much luck. Then I was on the plane headed to Amsterdam on Saturday and Duty Free was available on the plane prompting me to browse through the catalogue to see if there was anything that might be able to assist with the flaky lizard like state my face had become. Enter in Kiehl's. Years ago Kiehl's was my go to beauty regimen products, but if you haven't noticed I love to try new products and Kiehl's fell off my radar. When I saw that I could purchase the Midnight Recovery Concentrate, I knew that my skin was going to be healed. So in combination with the Ultra Facial Cream (also available on the flight) I woke up this morning to my skin visibly less dry and dramatically softer than when I went to bed. I still have a few dry patches, but a few more nights and I think we will be back to normal. Which is good, because right now I am looking a little tired due to jet lag and I can use all the help I can get!

I may have picked this up as well, but only because I needed to distract from my scaly skin. Really.

Home Sweet Home

I have been absent the last week or so because I was either jet lagged or crying tears of joy over seeing my shoes for the first time in 6 months. Seriously important stuff. I was pretty much gone from all forms of social media, the blog and kinda in the dark about the world news, all so I could get the house and myself in order. This week that has all changed. While the house is not 100% put together, we are more there than not so I can get back to my Internet way of life. I am sure you all have missed me as much as I have you. If not I will continue to believe it anyway.

While unpacking I discovered some things I forgot I had, found things broken that I wish weren't (why can't the dollar store dish break instead of the one that was 60 years old and packed so carefully? I bought the dollar store glass just so it could break. Isn't that the whole point of the dollar store? Other than buying the strangely fluorescent orange Cheetos that aren't Cheetos and you would never eat, but they are a good conversation starter. Or is that just me?) and things I can't believe I packed in Seattle only to throw away down here. In my defense I was sick when I was packing up the condo and can't be held 100% responsible for my actions. Now that that part is over there is lots of new stuff to share from here in the OC, but until then I will share my favorite part about living here in the OC.

Birds are making noise early in the morning, but these were
just have fun flying around the canyon.
This is right outside our front door. It makes breakfast that much
better when you sip your coffee and get to enjoy this.
Plus the amazing weather we have been having makes breakfast
on the porch amust do everyday.
This is a path into the canyon that I take every morning on my run.
I see about 10 - 15 bunnies, lizards and lots of birds every day.
One day I will get a picture of a bunny!

Over The River and Through CDG

We are back on the road at the crack of dawn tomorrow (or as you are getting ready for bed on the west coast) and heading back to California. We will move into our new place this weekend and I can't express just how excited I am to unpack all my stuff. I haven't seen most of these things in at least 5 or 6 months. It will be like Christmas, but just for me. I am sure there will be a few things I forgot I had. I also have some packages at my parents to go through. Double Christmas! Yay!

Even though we are getting up at the crack of dawn tomorrow I can at least comfort myself with the fact that we are stopping over in Paris at the CDG airport. This means I will get to hit up the LadurĂ©e counter and nosh on some of the most amazing macarons I have ever had. They are so lovely that I may just have to get a sampler pack. Going to the cafe in Paris is definitely more fun, but I am not one to be picky when it comes to getting my hands on these!

I will have one in every color!!

Friends with Blue Coats & Crack like snacks

It's always a good thing when you fly to have no issues and yesterday's flight was smooth as can be. The highlight was the lady ahead of me getting off the plane in Paris was Mila Kunis who turned around thinking I was her assistant asking me for her passport. She then had the look of disappointment before spotting her assistant was way behind me. I just smiled and moved out of the way, thankful I resisted the urge to ask where she got her coat (I was admiring it before I knew who was wearing it and almost did ask). Also I was desperate to get some tasty French coffee before catching our flight to Amsterdam. I tend to be a disappoint in the celebrity realm and it reminded me of the time I was working the US Open tennis in New York. After closing up our hospitality suite in Manhattan I took the extra car (limo) to the stadium. We had a suite at the stadium and used the VIP entrance which is also used by celebrities so when we pulled up all the photographers were ready and then it was just me. There was actually an audible disappointed groan from them. Good thing I think I am pretty awesome otherwise I might end up with a complex.

Anyway you can see the coat here, but I have yet to find it in an online shop although admittedly I have only been up for a few hours and am a little jet lagged so the brain may be a little slow to catch up. I did however manage to get out of the house to pick up my favorite snack in the Netherlands, cocktail wasabi noten. They are basically peanuts wrapped in a mini cracker like substances and are as addictive as crack. I also believe the walk to store was exercise enough to eat the whole bag. Everyone wins.

Christmas 2011 is officially over

I just surfaced from a full day of finally succumbing to the sickness that is going around. I think jet lag, lack of sleep and the crud all converged at once because they are jerks.  After drugging myself into a stupor last night I got my first complete full nights sleep (if you don't count waking up at 5am, but considering I went to bed at 7pm it all works out) since I returned to the US. I finally feel human again, which is good because the BF and I are in La Jolla and the sun is out and the door is open. I better enjoy this lovely weather in the middle of January while it lasts.

The highlight of this past weekend was of course celebrating the 4th (and final) Christmas with the family in LA. We had two days of fabulous food, drink and presents. I scored a new drive for my Mac Air, which means I have a lot of music to upload. This has officially been the longest Christmas I have experienced and it has been fun, but glad it's over. Next up, house hunting!

My parents left up the tree for me.
I am sure they are super excited to take it down now.
My nieces and nephew worked hard on their Gingerbread houses.

Pork loin, gingered carrots and mashed potatoes for dinner #1. Yum.

Alive in Seattle

I arrived at SeaTac yesterday to fairly warm weather with only a slight bit of rain (which is considered a win for Seattle in January). I had a fantastic afternoon with a good friend and then tried to stay up and hang out with my family for as long as possible. Despite my best efforts I have been up since 2:30am pacific time. You would assume since I have been up for hours that I would have pulled out the Christmas gifts for the family and friends from the suit case, repacked, taken a shower, eaten breakfast and am all ready to tackle the day. You would also be wrong. I have watched 4 episodes of Once Upon a Time, had three (they were small) bagels, some salad, 8 gallons of water and broke my charger thingy for my computer. Jet lag sucks. My goals today are small, but at least they include Mexican food and Target. Hope your day is equally stimulating.

To kick start your morning here is one of my favorite 'Seattle' bands playing one of my favorite songs.
